What does a great mom deserve on Mother’s Day? How about a personal limo, dinner at a great restaurant, a movie of her choice, and a spa gift certificate? One Maltby 6th grader, Kaylee Joy (K.J.) Fredrickson, gets to give her mom all of these things, thanks to her winning essay in the 1st Annual “It’s All about Mom” Mother’s Day Essay Contest. Brighton Ford is the proud sponsor of this contest. Looking to expand on our tradition of supporting Brighton Schools, Brighton Ford approached Scott Brenner, principal of Maltby, and Ken Hamman, principal of the high school, with an idea. Middle school students write essays honoring their own moms. High school English students read the essays and choose a winner and runner-up. With guidance from their teachers, over 25 Maltby 6th graders put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, to honor their own mothers on this special day. As one student wrote, “I think my mom is the world’s best even if I don’t win.” Another student reflected, “My mom is just so awesome…writing this essay makes me realize how much I need her!” An inventive student even wrote an A-Z poem about mom! Brighton Ford is thrilled to provide the following to KJ’s mom: A personal limousine for use on a day she chooses Dinner for 2 people at Sagano Japanese Steakhouse Movies and Concessions for 2 at MJR Theater A gift certificate for selected spa services at Michele’s in Brighton The runner-up, Savannah Gazdecki, will surprise mom with a dozen roses. As well, all participants can help mom beat the heat with a “Best Mom in the World” hat. When asked how her mom is going to react, KJ said, “She’s going to be speechless!” Special thanks to all the 6th grade English teachers and students who participated and to Scott Brenner and Ken Hamman for overseeing the project at the middle and high schools. Finally, a big “Thank You” to Kelly Armstrong and her AP English students for reading and selecting the winner and runner-up. A belated Happy Mother’s Day to all from Brighton Ford-Mercury! Selected Quotes from Each Essay “I always tell her, ‘I love you to the moon and back a million times!’.” “Despite the long hours and commute, she still manages to spend time with the family!” “My mom is the one who always tells me to be true to yourself.” My mom “takes me horseback riding, takes my brother to hockey, helps us with homework, makes us our favorite meals.” “All the people who know her name / Believes she could put any heart to shame.” Comparing Mom to Molly Brown: “Molly was very involved in charity work, just like my mom.” “My mom knows what is best I must confess.” My mom is “nice, pretty, funny, caring, amazing, cool, loving and sweet. I could go on and on.” “I am proud to have such a strong and powerful woman for a mom.” “My mom and I like to discuss books, movies…laugh, chat…it is really enjoyable.” “My mom is the BEST mom in the world because every little thing about her is perfect. She is a teacher. Every day she changes a child’s life.” My mom “works so many hours so she can pay for all of our activities.” “My mom bakes me chocolate chip pancakes and brings them to my room.” “When I grow up I want to be just like her because she has a great attitude and fantastic personality!” “Mom and I are best buds, we do everything together.” “There is not a single mom in the universe that could replace her to me, not even the richest of the rich.” “When we are sad: she is there to brighten our day.” “So I have just one thing to say to her – I love you, Mom.” “She has taught me and my siblings that you are never too old to have fun and follow your dreams.” “My mom has made it through / A lot of sleepless nights / From the seemingly endless / Supply of sibling fights!” “She takes care of an elderly couple every day after she drops my brother and me off at school.” “With a 100 other things she could be doing, she is always there ready, willing and supportive.” “My mom is very good at helping me resolve the problems before they become bigger.” “There’s one who is courageous and one who has the wisdom of Albert Einstein. And that mom is MINE.” “Most importantly, she is my best friend.” “She encourages me to do my best and follow my heart.”

Bill Teasley’s Retirement: 40+ Years of Passionate Business

By Bill Teasley’s count, he has been selling cars since 1976, or 1967. Whether his start in auto sales was 34 or 43 years ago is beside the point. More importantly, today marks Bill’s last day as a car salesman. It has been less of a career, more a passion for Bill. When asked about his fondest memories of working at Brighton Ford, Bill does not point to specific moments of time. Instead, he reflects, “You know, every sales gets you excited, just like the first one. I have met all kinds of people and helped them find a car that is right for them. Now, I am selling cars to their kids and their grandkids.” Knowing that Wilson Ford was sold in 1988 to the Spitlers, I wondered when Bill started with the dealership (now known as Brighton Ford-Mercury). “From the very start…it was a package deal, they got the dealership and me, too,” he laughs. I asked Bill what advice he would give to someone just starting in the business today. “It doesn’t happen overnight,” Bill explains. “Sales is about building relationships. You have to treat people with common courtesy and guide them through the steps [of buying a car].” What plans does Bill have now that he will be a retired salesman? Work. Bill is the owner of two businesses – Captain Frosty and Checkerz Pizza – across the street from one another on Pettysville Road in Pinckney, MI. Bill Teasley will be missed at Brighton Ford-Mercury, but he won’t be too far for us to see him in the future. Head down to Checkerz at 9245 Pettysville Road in Pinckney and ask if the owner is available. Regardless if you get to see Bill and congratulate him on his retirement, eat some hot slices of pizza and then cross the street to Captain Frosty’s for a delicious dessert. From everyone at Brighton Ford-Mercury, we wish Bill all the best in his retirement. Thank you for so many years of great service.

Brighton Ford and Social Media Hello fans, we are so excited for the growth in our Facebook fan base. Last week we passed 1,000 fans and we are excited to add another thousand and so on. One of the key aspects of our Facebook page is the Livingston County area. We are committed to bringing you news about things happening in your neighborhoods. Please let us know if there are events or news-worthy items we are missing. You can find us on other social media sites such as Twitter (@brightonfordmi), YouTube (http://bit.ly/d0yeEd), Flickr (http://bit.ly/bhwyHa), and LinkedIn (http://bit.ly/9u8cz0). Bulldog Hockey Downs South Lyon in OT, 3-2 PLYMOUTH – The Brighton hockey team escaped Monday night with a win versus the team with whom they share a home ice rink, South Lyon. The Bulldogs were in command of the game for two periods, scoring two goals. The goals came from Sean Nelson, on a pass from Reid Sturos in the first period, and from Sturos unassisted and shorthanded in the second. Unfortunately, like so many times this season, Brighton simply lost focus and offensive or defensive control throughout the third period. South Lyon sent a barrage of shots at Eric Lipon, Brighton’s goalie. Two goals got past him. The first was scored by Eric Casper on a power play halfway through the period. Then, with just over six minutes remaining, Trevor Eckler stuffed a rebound in the net. While the Bulldogs haven’t been accused of consistency much this season, they have always shown resiliency and they needed it last night. In the overtime period, Mike Shuster found a path past the South Lyon goalkeeper on a short rebound. Brighton will play again at Compuware on Wednesday, facing Detroit Catholic Central which defeated Northville, 5-1. In other action, both Pinckney and Hartland dominated their opponents to advance in their own regions. Saving the State Fair: Mike Rogers’ ideas Mike Rogers, state representative from Brighton, has submitted legislation in an attempt to save the Michigan State Fair. Last year, the state eliminated funding for the fair and closed the State Fairgrounds in Detroit. Citizens in Michigan are split on government funding for the fair, but almost all agree that losing the fair is an unwanted and sad effect of the difficult economy. Enter Mike Rogers and his legislation. The bill allows the state to open up bidding to individual contractors and municipalities for the State Fair funding and location. It also eliminates the Fair Authority Board, paving the way for relocation. Rogers would welcome Brighton-based Metropark Authority in any effort to revive the fair. He states, “I'm hearing other locales are interested.” For now, the fair is defunct. Whether Michigan citizens support efforts to revitalize this 150-year old tradition is yet to be seen. Jump Start the Heart: Local Law Enforcement Fundraiser Jump Start the Heart is a fundraiser supported jointly by the Brighton-area Michigan State Police post and the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department. The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise funds for life-saving medical equipment. Specifically, donations will help the police buy automated external defibrillators, devices that return a person’s heart to a normal rate following a heart attack. “Understandably, in these uncertain economic times, it may be difficult to solicit the monies needed for the Jump Start the Heart initiative,” said Sgt. Mark Thompson of the state police. “We are asking ... the Livingston County community to help us obtain this needed emergency medical equipment that has proven itself to sometimes be the difference between life and death.” The departments hope to purchase at least 10 defibrillators. Each costs an estimated $1400. Anyone interested in donating can do so by sending a check or money order to Jump Start the Heart, c/o Michigan State Police, 4803 S. Old U.S. 23, Brighton, MI 48114. For more information, call Thompson or Trooper Deanne Oswald-DeBottis at (810) 227-1051. BRIGHTON, PINCKNEY - Brighton Ford is a proud partner with Gleaners’ Food Bank of Livingston County. This February, we have visited three local grocery stores – Kroger’s and VG’s in Brighton and Busch’s in Pinckney. At each grocer, we collected 1,000 pounds of donated groceries for families in need. We have been thrilled with the participation across Livingston County. On Saturday, we had several patrons show up simply to donate food; they didn’t even need groceries for themselves! One woman even dropped off a VG’s gift card worth $50. Some VG’s customers donated groceries and told us that they were doing so because, in the past, Gleaners’ provided their families with meals during a time of need. We are proud to live in such a generous and selfless community. Thank you to all those who donated food, money, and time to such a worthy cause. This Saturday, February 27th, we will host one more Fill a Ford with Food for Gleaners event at VG’s in Howell. Join us from 10 AM – 2 PM to donate your money or groceries for families in need.

Brighton Swimmers Relish Night Despite Loss BRIGHTON – The spirits of Brighton High School swimmers were high following their final home meet this past Thursday. Despite being beaten soundly, 103-78, by a tough Northville team, the Bulldogs were happy to have made some great improvements. The success extended outside the pool as the team focused on providing fans a fun experience this season. Freshmen Chase Nielson wore foam gloves to punch through a paper barrier, leading the team into the pool. Soon after, Sophomore Mitchell Griest, who has served as the team guitarist at home meets, performed the national anthem. At senior night, as the echoes of Griest’s guitar reverberated, Brighton swimmers were both excited and proud. "It was a tough meet," Brighton coach Tim McInnis said. "Those guys are tough. They're ranked in the top five in the state. It was a really good eye-opener for our (state-qualifiers). We haven't had too many close meets." Brighton senior Michael Griffith was a winner in the 50-meter freestyle and also helped the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle relays capture first place finishes. Brighton Girls’ Cagers Victorious HARTLAND – The Brighton Girls’ basketball team defeated Howell Tuesday, 49-43. The Eagles defense was focused on shutting down Bulldog center Angela Bisaro. Brighton’s leading scorer was held to four points, but teammates Kirstin Tripp and Anna Matteson contributed 16 and 11 respectively. “I thought Kirstin and Anna made huge plays down the stretch," Brighton coach Jason Piepho said. "Shannon McCarthy and Sarah Goodwin made some key free throws down the stretch." The Bulldogs are in a position to earn a spot in the KLAA Tournament. According to Piepho, “Hopefully we can put a string of wins together and get some momentum. We've been close in every game we've played.” Brighton Boys’ Hoops in Control BRIGHTON – The Bulldog cagers are a half game ahead of Grand Blanc, thanks to a big victory over Hartland, 60-43, on Tuesday afternoon. Their rival’s game versus Howell was postponed due to the snow storm. Brighton was paced by Jackson Armstrong who scored 18 points. The win pushes Brighton’s record to 14-1, 8-1 in the conference. "We can secure at least a share of the title at Pinckney on Friday," Coach Bob Brugger said. "It's going to be a great challege for us to go in there and try to get that win." Brighton and Hartland Wrestlers Earn Titles; Howell Knocked Out PINCKNEY – Brighton dominated Ann Arbor Pioneer in the final to win the title at the Division 1 District Championship in Pinckney. Several wrestlers had pins including Vince Tkac (171), Kurt Alder (189), Jordan Amine (103 lbs.), C.J. Brish (119), Evan Hoshaw (125) and Keith Kooperman. Aaron Calderon (135), a freshman, won his match 17-5. For Coach Sam Amine, it was a gratifying victory. “It was a long time waiting for this school," he said. "I'm proud of the kids. They wrestled really tough. We wrestled Pioneer a couple of weeks ago, and a couple of matches we lost then, we won this time around." HARTLAND – Hartland took home the District Championship at home. The hosts were not welcoming to their guests last night as the Eagles won both matches by large margins. First, Hartland handled Lakeland 69-9 and then they dismantled Milford 77-0. "We wrestled great," Hartland coach Todd Cheney said. "Our seniors won their last match at home, and it continued our streak of not losing at home since we moved to the new high school." An amazing amount of Eagles scored two victories including Keith Boldt (112), Doug Baughman (145), Matt Ostermiller (171), Sean Wright (189) and Nick McDiarmid. Marcus Lopez earned a pin in his first varsity match. HOLT – In another district, Holt played the poor hosts. First, they held Okemos without a point, 88-0. In the final match, the Rams defeated an ailing Howell squad. Defeating a school like Holt is difficult enough, but without five starters, the Highlanders were outmatched. Holt, last year’s State runners-up, advanced to the regional with a 44-23 victory. “We're just beat up all over the place," Howell coach Dan Minock said. "It's disappointing. With those guys in the lineup, I'm not sure we don't beat them. I'm serious." AUTHOR’S NOTE: The reporting on this website is based on that of several authors at the Daily Press and Argus, available online at The Livingston Daily.
